Tuesday, October 26, 2021 (Health Day News)-Citterio Premium Italian Salame Sticks, mainly sold at Trader Joe's, are linked to an outbreak of Salmonella. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 20 cases in eight states.

The agency said in a statement about the epidemic that most patients (80%) are younger than 18 years old. The three have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. The outbreak included residents of California, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

The actual number of patients may be higher than the reported number, and the epidemic may not be limited to states with known diseases. The CDC explained that this was because some people recovered without medical care and were not tested for Salmonella.

Trader Joe’s grocery store has stopped selling these products. The CDC stated that consumers who hold these products—regardless of the best shelf life or the place of purchase—should throw them away.

Use hot soapy water or use a dishwasher to clean items and surfaces that may have come into contact with the product.

Most people infected with Salmonella will experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 6 hours to 6 days after exposure to the bacteria. Children under 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop serious diseases.

The CDC recommends that if you experience severe symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

According to the CDC estimates, Salmonella causes approximately 1.35 million illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the United States each year. Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned consumers of another Salmonella outbreak, and fresh onions were identified as the source of infection in 37 states.
