(CBS Detroit)-Volunteers from the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in the east side of the city work hard to provide hundreds of meals to families this Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday, cars drove through the distribution area of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen warehouse, and everyone received a complete Thanksgiving lunch box.

"They got a huge turkey, they got a huge box filled with various canned foods of rice and vegetables, and many things were filled with their truck," said Mike Ritchie, president of Comerica Bank Michigan Market.

Employees at Comerica Bank have been volunteering for Capuchin for many years. In November 2020, the bank donated US$100,000 to support the organization's plans to 2021, including this event.

"Oh, we couldn't do it without Comerica and some other companies that sponsored us, we couldn't do it ourselves," said Rob Roemer, operations manager of the Capuchin Monkey Soup Kitchen Warehouse.

Brother Roemer said that there is a huge demand for food in the community, especially when prices are rising. They have nearly 600 families registered to participate in today's event.

Romer said: "Unemployment benefits, different benefits, and stimulus checks have put them on hold for a while, but they have dried up."

In addition to the upcoming Christmas food event, Capuchin Soup Kitchen provides food, clothes and human development projects throughout the year, and they are always looking for volunteers.

Rich said: "I want to say that we can do a little bit to help people have a happy Thanksgiving, which will make you heartache."
