Why the Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce Jar is upside down

Cranberry Sauce: Like or hate it, Thanksgiving dinner seems incomplete without it.

When it comes to sour red condiments, everyone has their own favorite-jelly or whole berries, canned or fresh.

Fans of the canned variety may have noticed a strange quirk of the ocean spray can, which is a more popular sauce variety according to Advertising Weekly.

Compared with other canned foods, these cans appear to be upside down, with rounded edges at the top and flatter edges at the bottom. According to the farm cooperative that makes the sauce, this is not an error or a mislabeling.

Ocean Spray told CNN Business that they make canned cranberry sauce to keep the jelly intact.

This method creates bubbles on the side (or top) of the circle, so consumers “can use a knife to sweep the edge of the jar to break the vacuum, and the log will slip out easily.”

According to "Scientific American" reports, this hard jelly texture is cooked with natural pectin from cranberry. The longer the cooking time, the harder the jelly.

Jelly fans who want to observe this method of releasing logs may encounter difficulties this year. Like many Thanksgiving staples, cranberry sauce has been difficult to find due to shortages caused by supply chain issues (including shortage of tin cans).
