Foods, beverages and agricultural products that are geographically connected or manufactured using traditional methods can be registered and protected as intellectual property rights. This protection is called Geographical Indication (GI).

Geographical indication protection guarantees the characteristics or reputation, authenticity and origin of the product. It protects product names from being misused or imitated. Wiltshire cured ham, Wiltshire cured bacon, and Wiltshire cured Golden Gate are eligible for consideration as a Traditional Professional Guarantee (TSG) product.

The TSG application must show that the product name has been used for 30 years or more, and it has been produced using traditional methods or traditional formulas. TSG products do not need to be produced in a specific geographic area.

The application does not meet the conditions set out in Articles 18 and 24 of (EU) No 1151/2012 as amended by SI 2020/1637

The name will be incompatible with the provisions of Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012 (Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012 as amended by SI 2020/1637, Article 21(1) (a))

The name to be registered is legal, well-known and economically significant for similar agricultural products or foods (EU No 1151/2012 revised by SI 2020/1637, Article 21(1) (b))

From the date of this publication, you have 3 months to send your counter notification to ukgiapplications@defra.gov.uk.

Within 2 months of sending the notice, you must send a reasonable statement of objection to ukgiapplications@defra.gov.uk.

You must send a counter notice before February 15, 2022. If you miss the deadline, Defra will not consider your comments.
